Subject: AppleTalk over Structured Wiring
Our buildings had a complete overhaul a couple of years ago. As part of
this, structured data wiring was installed, for Ethernet and Token Ring. We
use 4*twisted-pair 24AWG cable to RJ45 sockets, running Ethernet on pins
1,2,3 and 6, which appears to conform to a standard assignment. Last week I
verified that AppleTalk and PhoneNet connectors perform satisfactorily over
this wiring (using one twisted pair).
There's just one question: Is there a recommended standard pin assignment
for an 8-pin RJ45 employed for PhoneNet connections?
I lied. There's another question: can anyone recommend a one-box solution
to bridge (as distinct from repeat) between several PhoneNet or LocalTalk
nets and Ethernet, to handle AppleTalk and IP traffic?
Cheers,
Francis

Subject: ark File decompression
The various files on my Canvas 3.0 master disks are all in a compressed
format with the postfix ".ark", type GCcm and ceator CMap.
Is there a readily available decompressor for this sort of file?
Canvas has an installer on the first disk that lets you decompress the
whole mess, but with only very limited selectivity, and zero ability to
inspect the contents of any single ".ark" file. This is a bloody nuisance
if you want to decompress a file or two, especially if you don't know on
which of those ark files it is.

Subject: Expanding my aging Mac II
I do most of my work on a Macintosh II, which is beginning to show its age.
I've installed 8 MB of RAM, a PMMU chip, and an AEHD+ floppy drive so I can
use high density diskettes.
Using Mode32 and System 7, I've been able to take advantage of virtual
memory; I've also learned how _slow_ virtual memory can be. When I use
Photoshop, I turn off virtual memory and use Photoshop's own memory
management, but with only 8 meg of RAM it's still painfully slow when working
on large images.
I'd like to add to the RAM in my machine, but I'm getting conflicting
information as to what I can get away with. According to some sources, to
use any more RAM I will need to get Apple's FDHD upgrade, which includes
improved ROMs which can handle the extra RAM. This upgrade would also give
me a SuperDrive, which I don't really need now! Other sources tell me that
the Mac II can handle up to 20 MB of RAM _without_ the FDHD upgrade, using 4
MB PAL SIMMs in the second bank.
My question to the kind souls in this group is as follows: Can a Macintosh
II without the FDHD upgrade really handle 20 MB of RAM, or am I stuck with
also getting the FDHD upgrade?
Thanks in advance for any insights; please post any responses to me, and I'll
summarize for the digest.

SoftPC, when in the foreground, treats the floppy drive like a DOS drive

Subject: Power PC Peripherals (A?)
A while ago, I posted a question on the digest asking if anyone knew about the
type of hard drive the Power PC would require, since I was hoping to replace
my current drive and wanted to ensure that the replacement would be compatible
if I upgrade to a PPC next year as planned. I had a few requests for
information, but no responses from the net. However, Adam Engst suggested I
ask the kind folks at Alliance Periperal Systems, since they are a development
partner of Apple's. I did so, and received the following reply from Paul
McGraw from APS. He has allowed me to forward this information, though with
the warning that Apple has a habit of changing its mind several times before
products are actually released. Caveat Emptor.
"Mr. Kolodny,
Though we are a development partner of Apple's and have insight into
PowerPC development, I would have to respond to your question by
saying that there really isn't a clear answer to the question yet.
Preliminarily, I understand that standard SCSI drives will work in
Power PC, though if I were a betting person, I would probably bet on
the third-high (1" x 3.5") form factor, rather than what is referred
to as a "half-height" of 1.65"x 3.5" form factor. Many large drive
capacities are currently available in this form factor - some with
spectacular performance numbers-and more are being announced each
day. Considering your stated plans, you may want to consider a
somewhat better performer than the 240 if it is your intention to
move it to your Power PC hardware. Thr 240 is an ontstanding drive,
but is no match for a high-end mac, let alone a Power PC. I'd
consider a Quantum 525 (for mid-range performance) or a Maxtor 540
(for relatively spectacular performance). Failing that, I'd wait to
buy for 3-5 months, at which time I believe more migh performance
options will be available in the 200-500 MB capacity range."
So that's the story. Let me conclude by thanking Mr. McGraw and Adam Engst,
and provide a shameless plug for both APS and TidBits, both of which provide
great service to the Macintosh community.
Cheers,

Oh, I dunno about that, Bruce. I think you may be unnecessarily global.
I've been using Mode32 ever since System 7.1 came out. When I first tried
the 32-bit enabler (with Connectix patch), 32-bit addressing would turn
on, but "about this mac" showed no effect -- all memory above 8M showed
up assigned to the system. I went back to Mode32.
I've updated several critical extensions since then, so -- having seen
your note this morning -- I tried again. Took me a while to get past the
SAM Intercept messages. SAM screamed about the enabler modifiying Dayna-
File, DOS Mounter Plus, and Prevention (Public Util) until I turned off
its checking of "modifying code resources." Dunno if I feel warm and
fuzzy about disabling that check. However, "about this mac" now shows
the expected 3 of my 20M assigned to the system, so the enabler works.
At least on my sytems that need it (IIcx, DayStar 33MHz & IIx, DayStar
40Mhz) Mode 32 works well and does not require me to turn off a useful
anti-virus check (No, SAM's REMEMBER doesn't help in this case). No, I
don't have Mathematica.
In any event, there is certainly no global requirement to trash Mode32
in favor of the 32-bit enabler, and there is some argument for using
the Connectix product over the enabler in at least some cases.

Having decided - given the volume of data that our lab has to backup - that
a tape drive and backups at night were the only way to go, a few problems

Ideally what we'd like to do is for the backup procedure to fire up on its
own at night, backup specific files for specific nights of the week and
maybe a total backup at the end of the week. While we're at it, may as
well wish for something that will do incrementals as well, and do the same

I have had luck with the following procedure for various postscript images:
1. Open the postscript file in MS Word.
2. Select all and change style to postscript.
3. Use LaserWriter 8.0 to print to file of type EPS, no preview.
Voila! You now have an EPS file which can be inserted into Word, MacDraw,
etc.
I don't know if this specifically works with TeX generated postscript.

Subject: THINK C: UK upgrade prices [Q]
Ummm...
Anyone got any sense out of Symantec (UK) about the UK upgrade from
Think C v5? The upgrade notice they sent me earlier this month has one or
two anomalies:
THINK C 6.0 RRP 219
THINK C 6.0 + THINK Reference RRP 129 (a bargain?)
C++ for Macintosh 6.0 upgrade 99
C++ + THINK Reference upgrade 139 (= 99 +40)
C 6.0 upgrade 69
C 6.0 + THINK reference upgrade 99 (= 69 +30)
Note the THINK reference is 33% more expensive when supplied with C++.
Is it also 33% more extensive? Intriguingly, the MPW option wasn't listed.
I phoned them, but the chap I spoke to claimed he was only authorised to
be as baffled as I was. If anybody has news on this, could they copy me
directly, please - I'm about 40 Digests behind in my reading, I'm afraid.

Subject: trouble typing the letter 'o'
Yup, this 'o' problem is one of the strangest things I've heard. It
almost sounds like a dead-key problem. You'll notice, if you type
option-i (on a US system, anyway), the keyboard will "lock up".
Now, if you type another vowel, you'll get the appropriate accented
character. Anything else and the system will puke out BOTH
characters.
Now the really strange thing is why should the 'o' key be a dead
key. I think we can rule out corrupted system files. It's quite
possible that there is a race condition of some sort in the
operating system that causes this (i.e. a bug). A race condition
would explain why it only happens to some people. In other words,
the time between releasing the previous key and hitting the 'o'
key could be significant.
Here's a test: does it only happen if you precede the 'o' key
with a key typed by the other hand? How about does it only happen
after typing a key with the _same_ hand? I'm interested in any
pattern that doesn't appear random.
So far from the responses, it looks like it only happens when
preceded by a key from the other hand. In this case, perhaps
there are overlapping key presses and the system is unable to
handle it if the time of overlap is >just< the right value.

8mb RAM, 230mb HD, CD-ROM, and possibly 1mb VRAM. How do I tell if I have
1mb VRAM? I was thinking about upgrading by selling my IIsi (keeping the
monitor and keyboard) and then buying a more powerful processor using my
educational discount.
When I bought my IIsi there was a good article in MacUser that explained
the attributes of each of the models. Were there any articles in MacUser
or MacWorld that covers the Centris 650, Centris 610, IIvx and other
models that would be an upgrdae to the IIsi? Where else might I get this
type information?
The University bookstore lists my Centris 650 at $3,216 and an equivalent
Centris 610 at $2,205. What might a IIsi with 3mb/40mb sell for? What
might it cost me to just buy a 200mb hard-drive and a CD-Rom player to
attach to my IIsi? Would my 68030 be fast enough to handle a CD-ROM
player? My Centris 650 has an application called CD Remote that allows me
to play audio CD's. Is this a part of System 7.1 software or would I have
to purchase this type of application if I bought a CD-Rom drive for my IIsi?

Subject: Zapping PRAM solves strange problems
Hi all,
In the process of doing some beta testing, I managed to mess some
things up on my Mac such that the little Macintosh icon in the Welcome
to Macintosh dialog was in black and white on my color monitor, which
was properly set to 256 colors. So I decided to zap the PRAM, something
I've never really done since I don't like having to go in and fix
various settings, like the mouse tracking rate. After rebooting and
getting everything reset, I discovered two interesting and useful
side effects.
First, my System had been taking almost 6 MB of RAM, which I thought was
a little excessive. After zapping the PRAM, that number dropped to
a much more reasonable 4.2 MB. Some of that was due to the disk cache
being lowered, no doubt, but I can't explain the rest of the drop,
not that I'm complaining, mind you.
Second, I'd been seeing a problem where AutoDoubler wouldn't kick
in automatically on my machine if I had my full set of 15 applications
running at once. If I quit out of a few, it would start compressing
during idle time again. Expansion always worked fine, and putting
the mouse in the Compress Now corner also worked fine. After zapping
the PRAM, AutoDoubler started doing idle time compression again, even
with all the applications active.
I can't explain this, but just as deleting the invisible AppleShare
PDS files from my shared volumes (so they could be rebuilt by File
Sharing) let File Sharing start up in almost no time at all in comarison
to the 15 minutes it used to take, zapping the PRAM has done good
stuff to my Mac. It's certainly not a panacea, but if you're seeing
weird problems, I recommend that you try it and see if anything changes.
cheers ... Adam C. Engst, TidBITS Editor

I have noticed this problem for quite some time. In the past I contributed
the problem to software installed with my ethernet card, since the software
has been removed and the problem still persists I don't know what to do.
Here's the problem:
Sometimes when I quit an application the system does not know that the memory
is available. For example, I'll run MS Word and Igor together. I only have 5
meg of RAM so if I want to run something else I have to quit one of the open
apps. Let's say that I quit Igor. When I go to open the new app I get the
not enough memory error message. If I go to About This Macintosh... I see
that the system and MS Word are open. The total memory used is a litlle under
4 meg, so I should have 1+ meg left. However, my mac is telling me that there
is zero k free. If I quit Word all the memory is once again available.
Has anyone else had this problem. I don't think it's a virus. I use
gatekeeper and the latest Disenfectent.
System: Mac IIsi, 5 MB Ram, 7.0 tuned, Math co-processor.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
